"Wishes and Ways"
What an inspiring passage of scripture! I was thinking about it today, and my heart awakened to something that maybe I was missing before. Very often the excitement, promise, and hope of the first part of this scripture speaks so loudly to what we are hoping for in life, that the jubilant echo has had a way of drowning out the equally reassuring "part 2" of this encouraging word! Yes, there are actually TWO promises in these verses! If you're like me, I'm positively euphoric as soon as I read, "HE WILL GIVE YOU..."! That alone sends my emotions to the moon and back with thrilling imagination and wonder! I LOVE receiving gifts! Who doesn't? So when the promise speaks to me that when I "delight myself in the Lord, HE WILL GIVE ME...", well, then I commence to delightin', so I can start askin', and He can start givin'! That's the way humanity is wired, right? We "do" so we can "get"! Even this first part of the verse has been misunderstood. I mean, how many times has this scripture been read, "delight in the Lord, and He will fulfill my Christmas wish list"? You mean all I have to do to get the celestial "Genie" to come out of the bottle and grant my every wish is to "delight" in Him? Sounds easy enough right? (Insert obnoxious buzzer noise here signifying.....WRONG!!!!!)
You see, when you're delighting in someone, THEY become the desire of your heart. Everything that is a part of them, THAT'S what you start desiring! You're no longer "using" them to fill out your wish lists, because THEY are what's on your list! The fulfillment of everything you desire and hope for is found in THEM! And the amazing thing is that when you get THEM, you get the incredible gifts that they bring!
So think about God for a minute! He is the giver of every good and perfect gift!!!! He is abundance, joy, peace, wisdom, and strength! And so many times, we pursue THOSE things in externals that turn out to be temporary at best. When they run out, we're right back to needing another "fulfilling fix"! But when HE is our delight, then the fulfillment of those desires is guaranteed! AND, when HE is your delight, you don't have to make any apologies to anyone for the things you may desire. I'm finding out that He puts desires in me as I grow in my intimate connection to Him. He places HIS desires in me! It really is incredible! I've come to read that passage of scripture this way...."Delight yourself in Him, and He will fill your heart with ALL for you to desire for!" In other words, He will give the desires TO DESIRE!!! What a great truth! And here's where many people might stop reading, throw a party, scream with excitement, and "get to desirin"! But wait, there is a part two...after "desire". Keep readin!
I know people who are movers and shakers, extreme achievers, "go getters", and pro-active in everything they do. They can be intimidating, and quite frankly, they are at times, exhausting to be around. :-) They are constant strategists and deal makers. To them, sleep is a distraction, and stillness is torture. This second part, the part AFTER "desire", can often be challenging, even excruciating to them. When they want something or see something they want, they go after it full force! Those characteristics can be beneficial and valuable when they are balanced with a restful mind, and tempered with patience, peace, and clarity of vision. Of course, there is the other extreme, which is just as frustrating to be around. Those that settle for the status quo, always selfishly choosing the way of least resistance regardless of the consequences! The slothfulness of that mentality often blames others for every unfortunate event in their lives, and they "wreak" of a "scent or sense of entitlement". Both of these extremes are surefire recipes for failure and frustration.
The "way" to our desires is just as crucial as the "desire" itself. Part two of this passage spells this out..."Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass."
Not only does the desire come from Him, but so does the way TO the manifestation of the desire. Some people have the idea that once the desire is identified, THEY are responsible, in all their creativity, manipulative ability, and ingenuity, to manufacture "the way". This leads to so much frustration and disillusionment. Doesn’t it stand to reason that the One who places the desire in your heart would most likely also know the way to see that desire come to fruition? Why is that so hard for the "flintrock" hard heads of humanity to accept! What a freedom that is, when you are willing to resign the way to the Way! I am convinced that our "actions", strategies, and plans should be more of a response to an invitation from Him to join Him in His ways to our desires, than a contrived, self-initiated, proactive venture that we then invite Him into, hoping He'll bless it and make it succeed. The plans are His, the desires are His; the choice--to run ahead, fret, busily scurry about in much activity but no productivity, or to respond, obey, trust, and rest in Him--is ours! My journey with Love Himself is teaching me this, and I'm finding so much more peace, strength, and faith than I ever experienced! He's given me the desires, and I'm following His way to see those desires, HIS desires come to pass! How's your journey goin? Keep walkin! Peace!
